MBA International Study Program - Havana, Cuba

Participate in an enriching, global experience April 29 – May 6, 2017

The International Study Program (ISP) is for current students from the Professional MBA and Online MBA programs.

During the Program you’ll explore business abroad in an experience that will enhance what you've learned in the business curriculum by highlighting issues and practices in an international context.

The program will take place after spring session from April 29 to May 6, 2017. There will be assignments before and after the trip. Experience this vibrant and fascinating city of more than 2 million and see it before it becomes commercialized. There are no McDonalds or Starbucks and advertising is almost non-existent. Explore more than 50 years of communist history and see the inevitable economic future unfold before your eyes. Stroll down the rustic streets of Old Havana to shop, eat or take a taxi in one of 8,000 vintage American cars. 

The Experience:

  • Visit businesses and governmental agencies
  • Listen to business professors from the University of Havana
  • Participate in the culture and visit unique destinations that Cuba has to offer

    • Welcome reception at Centro de Estudios Martianos (CEM)
    • Lecture on US-Cuban Relations at CEM
    • Lunch at La Moneda with talk about training program (included)
    • Walking tour of Old Havana
    • Welcome dinner in Old Havana

    • Breakfast at Residencia
    • Lecture on Changes in Cuban Economy at CEM
    • Lecture on Monetary Issues at CEM
    • Group lunch at Artecorte, community project in old Havana (included)
    • Meet with Camilo and Papito, local entrepreneurs in charge of the Artecorte project
    • Dinner at Residencia 
    • Salsa dancing at Club 1830

    • Tour around Varadero

Costs:

The program fee is $1,600 plus 3 credit hours of tuition and fees and includes:

  • Hotel accommodations (based on triple occupancy) 
  • Daily breakfast
  • Most lunches and dinners
  • All ground transportation to activities conducted during the program
  • Local tour guides as necessary
  • Entry to cultural sites as indicated on the itinerary
  • Business visits

In addition to fees, you'll be responsible for:

  • Airfare to the program location (we will travel as a group - US commercial flights to Havana should start by the end of 2016)
  • Some meals and incidentals

Registration:

Space is limited! Only 20 students will be accepted. There are no prerequisites for the class.

Deadline for application is Oct. 1, 2016. Applications received after October 1 may be considered if we are able to accommodate additional students. Students will be selected by a selection committee in the College of Business.

Process:

  • You must upload a Statement of Purpose at the time you submit the application. This document includes any information you think would be helpful to the selection committee in making a decision about your application about why you would like to participate. If you have any trouble uploading this document, you may email it to dmiller@ohio.edu.
  • You may be contacted for an interview with a member of the selection committee.
  • Students will be notified if they are accepted by October 30, 2016, and have until November 15 to accept or decline.
  • Students who accept will be notified of additional administrative steps, including the payment of a non-refundable $500 deposit that will be required. Instructions will be provided; please follow them carefully.
  • Your application will be reviewed and we will run a background check through the Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility.
  • There is a minimum 3.0 GPA requirment.

Waiting lists and declines

Because spots are limited, students who do not make the cut may be placed on a waiting list. We will let wait-listed students know as soon as spots become available.
