An internship with the Dallas Cowboys gave this Business Bobcat the hands-on experience he needed to flesh out his career goals. Meet Sports Management senior and President of the Sports Business Association Sam Mercuri.
Name: Sam Mercuri
Major(s): Sports Management
Minor(s) or Certificate(s): Business Minor and Sales Certificate Candidate of the Schey Sales Centre
Class year: 2015
Why did you choose Ohio University? : Once I visited campus for the first time I knew it was the place for me. The overall atmosphere is the perfect setting for an ideal “college town.” The campus is beautiful and Athens feels like its own little world. Once I learned about OHIO’s prolific sports management major, I knew that this was the perfect fit for me.
How did you choose your major(s)? : I always knew that I wanted to be a business major, I just was not sure in what capacity. Once I learned of the sports management degree and its reputation of being number one in the country, I immediately jumped at the idea of working in sports, something I am very passionate about. Almost four years later and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
How has your involvement in student organizations/select programs (OUSEMG, Select Leaders, etc.) added to your education? : I am the current President of the Sports Business Association. SBA is the main student organization for sports management undergrads. I’ve been involved with SBA since my freshmen year. Through SBA, I’ve been able to have hands-on experience working in sports outside of the classroom. I’ve also been able to travel to multiple career fairs, networking functions, and sporting events for some really awesome experiences. Being in SBA has opened a lot of doors for me and I would not be where I am today without my involvement with the organization.
What kind of real-world experience did you get from your internship? : I was fortunate enough to have had a seven-month internship with the Dallas Cowboys as a ticket sales and service intern. I was able to get this position through my involvement in SBA and the help of Louie Iglesias, the Assistant Director for the Sports Admin Department. This experience was invaluable to my career. I have always known that I wanted to begin my career in ticket sales, and working for the Cowboys I was able to have hands-on experience and gain an understanding of what it’s like to sell tickets for a professional football franchise. The connections I made during my internship expanded my network immensely and as a result, I was able to accept a full time position with Legends Global Sales upon my graduation in May.
What is your favorite class in the College of Business? : My favorite class was SASM 3010, Sports Marketing. I really enjoyed this class because of the subject matter and the course project was extremely hands-on and dealt with real world applications.
Which College of Business mentor/faculty/staff member has had a positive influence on your education? : Louie Iglesias has been the driving force for my professional development during my time at OHIO. I have worked closely with Louie the past few years. Not only did he provide me with the opportunity for my internship, but he has offered crucial advice and shared his experiences with me so that I am more than prepared to begin my career.
How has your College of Business experience shaped you as a student? : The College of Business at OHIO is phenomenal. The faculty, facilities, and courses are all second to none. I have had terrific experiences with professors that have really helped my along the way and the hard work needed for each class has prepared me for a career after college.
Do you feel prepared to enter the workforce? : Absolutely. I have received exceptional professional development training through the Schey Sales Centre and from my professors and advisors.
What are your career goals? : I want to be the Vice President of Ticket Sales for a professional sports organization.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus/in Athens? : The Overhang. It’s relatively new and with televisions, pool tables, great burgers and cheap drinks; it’s a great spot.
What do you and your friends do for fun on campus? : Court Street and play basketball or workout at Ping.
What is your favorite thing to eat on campus/in Athens? : Chipotle is my all-time favorite, but as far as local food is concerned, nothing beats Bagel Street Deli.
What do you like best about living in Athens? : It feels like home. It is the perfect size campus, not too big, not too small. It’s nice being able to walk anywhere and enjoy the campus. Over my time here I have met so many people that it’s hard to walk down the street without seeing a familiar face.
Why should a prospective student consider Ohio University’s College of Business? : The education, training, and professional development you will receive during your time here will more than prepare you to not just enter the workforce, but to set yourself apart from others that did not attend OHIO.
