Alumna Karli Anderson glitters in the gold business

Last week, we celebrated Women’s Equality Day – but it’s always timely to celebrate a successful alumna, especially one who climbed the ranks to earn a leadership role in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Last week, we celebrated Women’s Equality Day – but it’s always timely to celebrate a successful alumna, especially one who climbed the ranks to earn a leadership role in a traditionally male-dominated field.

After completing her undergraduate education at Ohio University, Karli Anderson attended The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania for her Master of Business Administration, where she discovered her passion for finance and the capital markets. She wanted to join a company that not only manages a portfolio, but also has public shareholders – shareholders that Anderson now works with on a daily basis in her role as vice president investor relations at Royal Gold, Inc., a $3.5 billion market cap company engaged in the acquisition and management of precious metals royalties and streams, based in Denver, Colorado. She helps investors to better understand the value that Royal Gold creates, which demands a lot of financial expertise.

The gold industry has a large capital market component, but that’s not the only reason Anderson chose it. “I knew it would be dynamic and take me all over the world,” she said. “It’s also an industry where someone under 40 can make a big difference and have an exciting career path.”

Anderson has already begun making a difference – not only in her job, but also by serving on the board for the Denver Gold Group since 2012, and as the Chairman of the Board since 2013. The group represents an astounding seven-eighths of the world’s publicly traded gold and silver mining companies, and includes member from 68 countries on six continents.

She’s also made a difference by taking a leadership role in a male-heavy industry. “It’s definitely an industry where you go from an office situation to a mine site where you’re wearing very heavy gear and equipment. I’m often the only woman in an investor meeting or board room,” Anderson said. 

“The interesting thing about it is there aren’t a lot of preconceptions about women in my field because there are so few of us.  Hopefully we’ll see more women enter the field in the future,” she continued.

Because of the field’s international nature, its members work with diverse people on a daily basis. That could mean working with someone from a different socio-economic background, with someone who speaks a different language, or with someone from a different country and diverse customs.

As Anderson has found, demographics should never deter you from pursuing your passion. “You have to have confidence, that’s the most important thing,” she said. “Your passion and confidence will help you succeed.”

Pressing questions for Karli Anderson

What’s the most exciting part of your job?

“I travel all over the world to visit mines that Royal Gold, Inc. has invested in, and I also travel to meet shareholders who are also located all over the world. My job takes me to lots of different countries, and I get to meet a lot of interesting people. I’ve flown more than 130,000 miles in the last 12 months.”

What advice do you have, particularly for young women, trying to make it in your industry?

“Pick an industry or niche that you can specialize in that you really like and have a lot of conviction in, and let people see how much you enjoy it. If you do, the passion you have will help distinguish you from some of your male counterparts. Opportunities will come your way.”

Why do you continue to support and stay involved with OHIO? 

“The College of Business really provides an excellent value for students, especially relative to the cost. I came from a small town, was a first-generation college student, and really felt like the College was a place where I could build the confidence that is crucial for success in business. Everyone at the College truly makes an effort, and oftentimes that effort really makes the difference in business. People at the College work a little harder and hustle a little more, and that’s why I am happy to support it.

The College also has a very strong bias towards best practices. They are adept at assessing what the current trends are in business, and integrating that content quickly into the curriculum. It’s actionable and prepares students to both get jobs and to be marketable to top-tier graduate programs.”

When you weren’t in class, where would we find you on campus?

“Either at the gym or at the C.I. (College Inn).”
