Name: Gaza Odunaiya
Major(s): Sports Management and Marketing
Class year: 2019
Why did you choose Ohio University?
Initially, I was hesitant about going to OHIO because I’m from Athens and I wanted to reach out. Now that I’m here, I’ve realized that there are so many new faces that it doesn’t feel like I’m stuck in the same city at all! I’m so excited to pursue a career in sports and be a Business Bobcat.
How did you choose your major(s)?
I grew up with a passion for track and field. While I’ve always enjoyed the sport, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue a degree related to athletics. But the more I learned about the career opportunities in sport management, the more I knew it was the right path for me. I’m also co-majoring in marketing.
How has your involvement in student organizations/select programs added to your education?
I’m involved in the College of Business Honors Program and it has changed my educational experience. One of the best parts of the program is that we go through it as a cohort, which means we progress as a group and every semester we take at least one class together. I’ve become great friends with my peers. The Honors Program also gives me incredible leadership opportunities and exposure to executives that will prepare me for a career after graduation.
If you studied abroad, where did you go and what did you learn from that opportunity?
I plan to study in Germany with the Global Consulting Program; I can’t wait!
What is your favorite class in the College of Business and why?
My favorite class so far has been Sports Management 1010 with Dr. Phal. This course is an introduction to sports management and facilitating events for games. We covered the basics and so much more! When you’re interested in the subject it doesn’t seem like a lot of work.
What are your career goals, and how did you figure out what you wanted to do?
Right now, I’m a little undecided. I’m interested in pursuing a career in professional sports or working for a sports brand.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus?
I enjoy everything about Court Street. There are so many restaurants and coffee shops. I like to choose a random café and get work done there.
Why should a prospective student consider Ohio University’s College of Business?
Not only does the College of Business have awesome professors, but there are endless opportunities to get involved, continue learning and gain hands-on experience. There are so many ways you will benefit from being a Business Bobcat!
What was your favorite career management-related experience at the College?
Going into the career fair my freshman year was a little intimidating, but after I was done I realized it was a lot easier than I thought. I know I’ll gain even more confidence and experience each time I go.
