Name: Jared Roese
Class year: Sophomore
Why did you choose Ohio University? :
It was a last-minute decision. I was going to play football at another school but got injured; I came to visit Athens and really liked the school.
How did you choose your major(s)? :
My grandfather was a businessman and I always enjoyed watching him and listening to his work stories. I suppose I wanted to follow in his footsteps.
How has your involvement in student organizations/select programs added to your education? :
I’m involved with Phi Sigma Pi, a national honors fraternity. It’s allowed me to explore opportunities that I didn’t know were available to me. This is how I got involved with the Global Health Case Competition. This is a big competition with students from different disciplines partnering together to work on real global health cases. The winning team is sent to travel to research their solution. One of the seniors in my fraternity approached me about partnering on the case competition and I jumped at the opportunity. It was pretty cool to be a part of it, and to win second place, especially as a sophomore.
What is your favorite class in the College of Business? :
I really enjoyed Introductory Accounting. I liked the way the class was structured and how much I learned.
Which College of Business mentor/faculty/staff member has had a positive influence on your education? :
Dr. Frost, who teaches management information systems. He’s taught me a lot about MIS, a subject I didn’t know much about before, and an area I’m definitely more interested in learning about.
How has your College of Business experience shaped you as a student? :
I am just finishing my first semester in the College and it has already had a significant impact on me. When you’re in the College of Business, everyone seems to have more direction for what they want to do, and the faculty and staff are incredibly willing to help you out and answer questions. It feels like you get more value out of your education here.
What are your career goals?
I’d like to work in healthcare. Both of my parents work in healthcare in different capacities and I know there are lots of intriguing opportunities in that field.
Where is your favorite place to hang out on campus/in Athens? :
I know it’s not technically in Athens, but I really like Strouds Run. I enjoy sitting on the “beach” on a nice day.
What do you and your friends do for fun on campus?
Lately, we’ve been going to the Athena Cinema on Court Street to watch some great films.
What is your favorite thing to eat on campus/in Athens?
I am going with Wings Over even though it may not be the healthiest.
What do you like best about living in Athens?
I love the feel of the town. It feels like home here.
Why should a prospective student consider Ohio University’s College of Business?
It offers some really great opportunities. The professors do a great job of helping you find the best fit depending on your strengths.
