Master of Sports Administration students gain industry experience during annual capstone trip in New York

Ohio University's Master for Sports Administration (MSA) program is recognized worldwide for preparing its students to succeed in the competitive sport industry by providing countless experiential learning and consulting opportunities; one of which is the spring semester capstone course.

This spring, 27 current MSA students stepped outside their comfort zone to work with key industry players on various consulting projects. The students worked on everything from researching sponsorship prospects and evaluating sponsorship effectiveness to creating their own index to quantify the anticipation and excitement of NFL games. It's hands-on experience like this that sets the students apart as they enter the field.

"Our fourth annual capstone trip to New York was a resounding success," said Norm O’Reilly, Fox Professor of Business and chair of the Department of Sports Administration at Ohio University. "Fifteen clients, 26 major project presentations, an alumni event, a few runs in Central Park, and a lot of New York culture were accomplished by our 27 about-to-graduate MSA students. The performance was top notch, clients were happy, and I was one proud professor. Here’s to many more!”

The capstone trip culminated with an alumni reception at the New York Athletic Club and brought together several members of the #OHIOFamily, including Peter Pilling (MSA '90), Casey Romany (MSA '08) and Jose Duverge (MSA '11) who spoke at the reception. Students and alumni had an opportunity to network and catch up with each other at one of the best venues in New York... making for a truly unforgettable trip.

"This trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that exposed our class to a wide variety of some of the biggest organizations in sports. The connections we made and the practical experience we gained highlight why this is such a special program," said Marshall Payne, MSA class president. "For me personally, presenting a brand-new metric to the NFL was an opportunity to gain meaningful experience in the exact field that I hope to build my career."

Experiences and events like this wouldn't be possible without the generous support of alumni currently working in the industry, Dean Sherman, OHIO's College of Business, and many others. For more photos from the trip, check out the album on OHIO's Sports Administration Facebook Page.
