Race for a Reason organized by Master of Sports Administration students
Thursday, April 21 2016 12:00am
This Saturday participants from across southeastern Ohio will join together for the 5th annual OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital Race for a Reason. With more than 1000 participants, this year’s goal is to raise $125,000 for charities.
Organized by students in the Master of Sports Administration program, participants can choose to take part in a triathlon and duathlon, five-kilometer run, three-kilometer walk, or mud run across the Ohio University Campus. Each participant is encouraged to raise money for their own “reason” by collecting pledges from friends, family, and strangers.
There are dozens of teams getting involved, made up of fraternities, sororities, student clubs, and local businesses. Here are a few of this year’s initiatives:
Team Heart and Sole (THAS)
THAS is an both an organization and a Race for a Reason team. The Columbus-based group aims to provide opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in events like Race for a Reason across Ohio.
Their goal this year is to raise $2000 to help purchase equipment. “We raised $400 and, OhioHealth made a contribution to THAS to purchase equipment,” said Paul Richard, team organizer. “Two other organizations, Civitan and the Scheck Charitable Fund, gave as well.” THAS is always looking for volunteers and teammates who are interested in facilitating meaningful relationships with people who have disabilities.
Lilly is a local girl who was born with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a devastating genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. Tragically, Lilly lost her father, Daryn, in a car accident just a week before Christmas this past winter, leaving her Mother, Kathy, to care and provide for Lilly on her own.
Graduate students of the sports administration program are honoring Daryn and supporting Kathy and Lilly through this difficult time. They’ve already surpassed their goal of raising $4000, and are still collecting donations.
Ohio University Equestrian Team (OUET)
A club sports team, OUET is an Interscholastic Horse Show Association team. A total of 35 members are raising money to promote education and involvement with horses and horse competitions. They are less than $50 from achieving their fundraising goal of $800.
