Careers in Sport Management
Combine a business and sports industry education to gain an edge in the competitive world of sports business.
Careers in the sports industry vary greatly. With a sport management degree from Ohio University’s College of Business, you’ll have the business acumen combined with an understanding of the special nature of the sports industry that will prepare you for the competitive world of sports business. Examples of careers our graduates pursue include facility management, sales, marketing and promotions, and intercollegiate athletics administration.
Every sports arena, stadium, or venue has a host of services and staff that need to be effectively managed to keep things running smoothly. Facility managers manage the operation and maintenance of sports facilities including buildings, grounds, and related equipment.
Sales representatives in sport bring together fans to support their favorite teams. Through hands-on work, sales representatives often sell group and season ticket packages that allow fans to get close to the action. Sales representatives are a key aspect of sport business operations and require highly developed interpersonal organizational, and leadership skills.
Those pursuing a career in marketing and promotions are responsible for the management and coordination of sports marketing efforts including soliciting and coordinating sponsorships. This role manages the game day experience, coordinates season-long promotional efforts, facilitates and coordinates promotional materials, maintains and increases attendance at contests, oversees group sales, and community relations efforts.
As an intercollegiate athletics administrator, you would provide guidance and direction for a school’s sports program. This role is responsible for preparing budgets, facilities planning, ensuring regulatory compliance, community outreach, and promoting student welfare and success.
